The following resources offers program suggestions to be followed both in the classroom and during a Gallery visit. It is also available as a  PDF.


Capturing our rural history


This program starts with a tour of The Gallery and an introduction to the enduring photographs of Reuben R. Sallows during which students will receive an introduction to our collection and a history of the community in which Sallows lived and worked for over 60 years. By looking at the six decades of his career, students will gain information about the life and times of the local community in Huron County, including issues such as access to transportation, local trade and industry, the newspaper as a form of communication and life on the farm.


The Business of the Art


This program starts with a tour of The Gallery and an introduction to the enduring photographs of Reuben R. Sallows during which students will receive an introduction to the collection and a history of “Sallows the businessman: a photographer ahead of his time.” Students will look at the business of fine art today, including the concept of on-line galleries and other contemporary forms promoting art, including copyright and censorship issues.


The History of Photography

This program starts with a tour of The Gallery and an introduction to the enduring photographs of Reuben R. Sallows, including a history of the development of photographic processes. The focus of information be photography from the mid-19th century to early 20th century and will include a discussion related to changes spanning Sallows’ sixty year career due to his ability to adapt to technological advances in photography.
