Citing Images and Photographs Citing Images and Photographs

The collections of photographs by Reuben R. Sallows included in this online searchable database have been made accessible to further knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of his work.

When using an image or photograph in a presentation or research paper the original creator must be credited, or cited. No single recognized format for citing electronic documents, images or sources currently exists.

As a general rule, the following elements are needed in the citation:

  • Photographer’s name
  • Title of photograph
  • Date
  • Title of collection where the image was found
  • URL
  • Digital Identifier
  • Date when you accessed, or visited, the photograph online

MLA-style Citation Format:


Photographer’s last name, first name, middle initial. “Title of photograph.” Date. Title of Collection. [URL] [Digital identifier] (Date of visit).
